iAM a Success Story
In April of 2020, at the onset of what we now know as THE global pandemic, I came up with this wild idea to launch a Kickstarter campaign to raise post-production funds for my first feature documentary titled The Kinloch Doc.
Now mind you, I am a first-time filmmaker without any previous film experience, a Black woman in a white-male-dominated industry, and did not have any well-known filmmakers attached to my project that would attract the big dollars. There was just me, my small team, and a vision that I believed in with every fiber of my being.
Within one month, we raised over $25,000 for my film (our goal was $20K). IN THE MIDDLE OF A PANDEMIC. Whenever I reflect on this moment, I am always amazed at how we pulled this through. And you know what I believe made this campaign successful? My story.
I’ve shared my journey as a filmmaker before ever getting comfortable with calling myself a filmmaker. I talked about my process in learning how to use a camera, I always showed behind the scenes content, I shared when I was accepted into a media training program and all the things I was learning, I shared when I felt like I was in over my head, and I shared when I needed support. This moment was 3 years in the making and now I am almost at the finish line with the completion of my first film.
